I got my first look at a prototype rifle in .338 Marlin Express this past summer in Illinois. Used. Make sure to watch till the end. They include the Standard rifle with a checkered walnut stock and 22-inch barrel; the Trapper with a synthetic stock, 16.5-inch barrel, and Skinner aperture sight; the Cowboy with an 18.5- or a 26-inch tapered octagon barrel; the 1895G with a walnut stock and an 18.5-inch barrel; the same gun with a laminated wood stock and a big-loop finger lever called the Model 1895GBL; the Model 1895GS with a straight-grip walnut stock and an 18.5-inch barrel; and the 1895SBL in stainless steel and laminated wood with an 18.5-inch barrel and a Picatinny rail with a Skinner aperture sight. The company is also introducing a Limited Editionseries, with the first rifle being a 336 Limited featuring a high-grade walnut stock, high-polish blued metal with some light scroll engraving,and the Marlin horse and rider in 24-carat gold on the left receiver panel. Why of course I said why? It would certainly sell. The patented Flex Tip technology of the FTX and MonoFlex bullets provide higher ballistic coefficients and velocity increases of up to 250 fps over traditional flat point loads while still providing shock-absorbing safety in tubular magazines. Still waiting, hoping for the day we can trust the Marlin name again. The .308 Marlin Express, on the other hand, was made with a thinner web than its parent case, the .307 Winchester, for additional capacity. They got back to me 2 weeks ago, saying my rifle could not be repaired and they would sent a new one. Despite what I knew, I tried to get an 1895 SBL anyway. Every person that got stuck with a substandard Marlin should get a replacement free of charge. And that is after 4 bx ammo over three trips. And it must outperform such old standbys as the .30-30 Winchester, .32 Win. Since Hornady discontinued their FP bullet finding suitable bullets for the .33 is not impossible but not easy. The only changes Ive made to it is to add a Williams peep sight on the receiver, and a fiberoptic front sight of the right height to match the rear sight. They've taken this particular model/caliber out of production and after talking to Customer Service, have not indicated it will ever return??? It is important to note that large loads are recommended for this gun and not Winchesters. Ever. But youre right, I wouldnt pay for an opinion. This fabulous propellant meters flawlessly and makes lever action cartridges like the 30-30 Winchester yield velocities in excess of 100 fps over any published handloads, with even greater gains over factory ammunition. On the product side, Marlin reduced its offerings from 29 catalog lever-gun models down to 18 . They didnt do ANY of that. I have a Early Marlin 45-70 Guide gun, with ported barrel and JM stamped barrel, I am in awe on how smooth the action works and how accurate it is, Flawless and I will never sell it.
