What is political media bias? How does it affect you?

We're in an election year, which means that someone, undoubtedly, will throw around the term 'political media bias' as either an attack or a defense. But few know what it is... Political media bias is where a media outlet's politics influences its reporting. For example, a liberal newspaper covering a conservative may have a more negative tone than would otherwise be used. The keyword there, is "may". As a general rule, it does affect the reporting, even if only by a little bit. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Where can I see examples of media bias? Why do politicians focus on the economy?

We have previously talked about how politicians focus on education and healthcare. But also, politicians focus on the economy during an election. Whether this is right or wrong is subject for debate, but why do politicians do this? Often, politicians focus on the economy as it is both a tangible and intangible thing. People can see the benefits of a strong economy, and will want to vote for the party that says "We did that!" Whereas, no one wants to vote during a recession, and especially not for the party who they blame. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Both sides use the economy to their advantage. Many people when watching a political debate see issues such as immigration, taxation and infrastructure as one of the most important issues in our society. Yet, when these issues are brought up in debate, politicians turn the debate towards either education or healthcare. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); This is often because the people plagued with bad education, or bad healthcare are in the most desperate situations. This means that when someone stands up on national TV and talks...

What is lobbying? Is it good for our political system?

Every election cycle, you have likely heard one recurring theme, no matter which country you are in: lobbying. This is often used many times by media outlets and political parties to show how corrupt another party/candidate is. But what really is lobbying and is it entirely bad for our political system? Lobbying is defined as: The act of a corporation or person donating to political candidates in order to gain favor if that candidate is elected. It is usually expected that the candidate that has seen a donation, will repay that firm for their contribution. This doesn't necessarily have to be from their own pocket, or campaign finance fund the next time round. But in the form of legislation, through our political system. Legislation can often be more valuable to corporations tha...

No-deal Brexit- Why does Boris Johnson continue to refuse to rule it out?

Brexit. It’s all that’s been talked about for three years. Ever since Boris Johnson became the PM, he has refused to rule out a no-deal Brexit. Why does the PM continue to do this? It’s simple. Boris Johnson is a fervent Brexiteer. He campaigned for Brexit. He ran for PM based on the fact he was a Brexiteer. He believes in the referendum held in 2016.  (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); During the recent G7 summit. The press repeatedly asked what the PM would do if MPs tried to thwart his policy. The PM declined to rule out shutting down parliament.  The PM spoke about Brexit “I think people are tired of Brexit. They’re yearning for the day Brexit comes off the front pages of the papers. This will only happen on October 31st. When Britain lea...
