Hannibal Hamlin: The Least Popular Vice President

The first Vice-President under Abraham Lincoln, Hannibal Hamlin only narrowly missed out on being President, having been replaced as Vice President by Andrew Johnson only a month prior to Lincoln's assassination. A Republican like Lincoln unlike Johnson, Hannibal Hamlin was relatively unpopular with both the people and Lincoln, the latter of whom dropped him from his 1860 re-election ticket in favor of the Southerner Johnson. Yet even after he finished his term as VP, Hannibal Hamlin went on to have a rather interesting career as a senator, Collector of the Port of Boston and foreign ambassador before retiring. Charles W. Fairbanks: From Log Cabin to Vice President

The 26th Vice President serving under Teddy Roosevelt, Charles W. Fairbanks was famous for his opposition to Roosevelt's "Square Deal" earning him the nickname of the "Puppet of Wall Street" and the ire of many Americans... A lawyer by trade, Fairbanks was born in a log cabin and through his own sheer intelligence (and some back alley deal making) rose up through the ranks of the Republican Party to win the VP nomination not once, but twice, and for two different presidents. Indeed, had he and Charles Evans Hughes won the 1916 election, Fairbanks would've become one of only three men to serve as vice president (after George Clinton and John C. Calhoun) and the only to serve non-consecutive terms! (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Early Life A...

Why Lord Randolph Churchill Was More Important Than His Son!

Often overshadowed by his more famous son, Lord Randolph Churchill was every bit the skilled orator and politician his son, Winston, would be remembered for being. Indeed, had history played out slightly differently, he could've even been Prime Minister! Yet his disloyalty to Lord Salisbury in the Commons during the latter's second term seemed to end his promising career before it ever really began, though inadvertently paved the way for his son to become Prime Minister himself... (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Early Life Randolph Henry Spencer-Churchill was born on the 13th of February 1849 at 3 Wilton Terrace in the affluent Central London district of Belgravia, as the third son of John Spencer-Churchill, Marquess of Blandford and his wife, L...

Why Charles G. Dawes Was The Most Important Vice President You’ve Never Heard of!

Though the name Charles G. Dawes is seldom remembered in early 20th century American politics, only being remembered for the post-WWI Dawes Plan that dealt with postwar reparations, Charles G. Dawes was the most important vice president you've never heard of! Serving as Calvin Coolidge's vice president after his re-election in 1924, Dawes helped the Coolidge Administration pass several bills, chief among them being the McNary-Haugen Farm Relief Bill (although Coolidge did end up vetoing this). But it wasn't necessarily what he did in office that made him arguably the greatest vice president, it was what he did before and after being vice president, such as being a war hero, a Nobel Peace Prize recipient and Ambassador to the UK to name but a few. Why Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Was The Most Important President we Never Had

Named in honor of his incredibly wealthy father, Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. was supposed grow up to become the US's first Irish-American and Catholic president. Yet, his tragic death at the height of WWII prevented this from ever happening. Whilst thought to be insignificant at the time, his death was arguably as significant as the death of Abraham Lincoln, or even, Archduke Franz Ferdinand. With his death, his younger brother, John, was hastily prepared for a job he was never meant to do. You might know Joseph's brother John as President John F. Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States. Yet, had Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. become president instead of his brother, he'd have been an even better president!
