In a post-WWII world, fascism has declined dramatically. However, the current climate crisis has caused the rise of a new form of fascism- ecofascism. But what exactly is eco-fascism and how do their views differ from other types of fascists?
Ecofascism is one of the most obscure forms of fascism. However, there are several political parties who support eco-fascism, most notably the Green Libertarian National Socialist Party in the US, known for being one of the dumbest political parties on earth.
Origins
Ecofascism, sometimes referred to as eco-fascism, has it’s origins in the fall of the Third Reich and Fascist Italy after WWII. After the end of the war, fascism and extreme forms of conservatism began to get a bad rap.
As such, many people with strong conservative views began to hide them. Others, began to alter their beliefs to focus on a specific element. This is how eco-fascism was founded.
Ecofascism was founded based on a mixture of eco-friendly and Nazi-fascist ideologies. Mostly, these ideologies come down to environmentally-friendly views with a strong government to enforce those eco-friendly views.
Although modern ecofascism is a modern political ideology, many argue that eco-fascism has existed for several years. Many argue that it was in fact the National Socialist German Worker’s Party that was the first ecofascist party.
During the reign of the Third Reich, the Nazis implemented several ecofascist policies. Many policies that the Nazis put in place have directly influenced policies that are the backbone of most ecofascist parties to date.
In fact, the biggest ecofascist party, the Green Libertarian National Socialist Party, nicknamed the “Green Nazis”, have most if not all of their policies based on what the Nazis implemented during the Third Reich.
Views
Many eco-fascists and ecofascist parties share the same political views. However, as with most other political views, there are several different views, so a view that one party may have, another may not.
The Environment
The whole ecofascist ideology is dependent on the environment. After all, the term “eco-fascism” is a combination of the words “eco-friendly” and “fascism”.
Ecofascists believe that we are in a climate crisis. They also believe that at the current rate and in the current climate, we are ill-equipped to fix the environment as we know it.
They believe that it is up to a strong government to get to zero carbon ASAP. They believe that the government should then go and be a servant of nature- planting more trees and doing more carbon offsetting schemes.
Animals
Animals are an essential part of the environment. As such, eco-fascists have similarly strong opinions on animals, animal rights and animal protection as they do saving trees.
Just as with saving the trees and the environment, supporters of eco-fascism are very strict on animals. They believe that the government should make things such as hunting and the unnecessary slaughtering of animals, illegal.
They also believe that things such as pet abandonment and pet abuse should be made illegal and punished by prison time rather than the fines or nothing that happens currently around the world.
Homosexuality
It’s well known that conservatives and fascists are against homosexuality, even despite there being several gay conservatives. Eco-fascists are no different, and have even stronger anti-homosexuality views.
Ecofascists are famous for having anti-LGBT views. Despite homosexuality’s positive affect on the environment- LGBT couples can’t increase the population, which causes adverse effects on the environment.
As with their views on most other social issues, their hatred for homosexuality comes from how divisive it is. The left loves to praise the LGBT community whilst the right likes to deride it, all whilst neglecting the environment.
Race
Just as with homosexuality, eco-fascists have a very conservative/fascist approach towards it. In many ways, ecofascists are seen as being quite racist (just as many people see conservatives as racist).
Unlike most other conservative parties, they aren’t “racist” because of the fact that racial minorities aren’t part of their base. It is actually because of the importance of the environment rather than the importance of race.
Most supporters of ecofascism are more worried about when we are protesting, debating and worrying about racial issues, that we aren’t focusing on fixing the environment.
Feminism
As with both race and homosexual rights, and pretty much all other social issues, eco-fascists are anti-feminist.
As with their opinions on race and homosexual rights, it isn’t that they don’t care or that it doesn’t affect their voter base. It’s because it neglects the environment that ecofascists want to protect so much.
As such, they have a very laissez-faire approach to feminism. They are big detractors of feminism from the point of view that it is deliberately divisive. And when we’re too busy arguing about feminism, we aren’t fixing the environment.
The Left
Ecofascists are incredibly critical of the left. Most notably, they are extremely critical of the socialist, communist and collectivist aspects of the left.
Just as with most other right-leaning ideologies, they despise the left. However, unlike most of the right, they don’t despise them because they’re dangerous or because they’re stupid, but because they’re divisive.
They know that a government who controls all of the country’s industry cannot adequately save the environment. A government that controls all their country’s industries cannot make the right and the left stand down.
The Right
Ecofascists are as critical of the right as they are of the left. Even if their criticism of the right is slightly less than their criticism of the left.
Proponents of ecofascism believe that the right, as in conservatives, could do more to “help” the ecofascist cause.
They believe that the wealthy elite- the ones who often support conservative causes, could do more to help the environment. They believe that for once they could put the world before their bottom line.
In fact, a few ecofascists do try to mascaraed as conservatives. They do this mostly by joining the main conservative party of their country and then trying to influence “green” legislation that their country could implement.
Political Correctness
As you can probably understand, ecofascists do certainly earn their name from their social views. Just as with their views of gays, socialists, communists, race and feminists, eco-fascists are extremely conservative.
Despite political correctness being a relatively new phenomenon (only coming to light in the 1980’s), eco-fascists are extremely against political correctness.
Ted Kaczynski, the Unabomber, in his 1995 manifesto, riled against political correctness. Unlike most other conservative organizations, this isn’t because they don’t believe in it, but because they should do other things.
They believe that instead of saying “You can’t say that!” people should be banding together and making the environment a better place and preserving it for the future.
Education
Unlike most other “radical” political views- whether left or right, eco-fascism dictates that you must be educated. It’s not that in order to join an ecofascist party that you have to pass an IQ test or something similar.
Instead, ecofascists want their supporters to sound intelligent. This is so that during political debates, they can get more people to their cause.
Why would you join a “radical” party that just sounds like a cult or a terror group, when you could join a “radical” party that is full of intellectuals?
To be “educated” in the eyes of ecofascists, you don’t have to have been to college. Instead, you have to be able to carry yourself eloquently, debate in such a way that brings more people to the side of eco-fascism.
Notable Ecofascists
There are several proponents of Ecofascism all across the world, both past and present, the most famous being:
