In this era of misinformation, distrust and media consolidation, it can be hard to trust anything, but the best conservative books will shatter that distrust! So which are the best?
Naturally, as with anything to do with people’s politics, there is great debate as to what truly is the political book out there. Even among conservatives, there is a great debate.
To put it mildly. Everyone will have their own opinion.
10. Wealth of Nations
The Wealth of Nations is known for being quite a famous economics book. But seldom is it a political, yet alone a conservative book.
Yet, when you think of it, the economy and politics are intertwined more than you realize!
Adam Smith penned The Wealth of Nations as a way to express how to profit from the capitalist system. Due to this, many ideas he penned almost 250 years ago, are a staple of conservatism today!
So you see, it is not just one of the best economics books out there (although I am no economist), but also one of the best conservative books out there too!
Although, it must be said that there are entire chapters that can be skipped (as they talk about then-pressing issues) and some of the language is occasionally hard to follow!
9. Lobbying: The Art of Political Persuasion
Chances are that you haven’t heard of Lionel Zetter, nor his seminal work on lobbying and its effects on our political system.
Unlike most books on lobbying, it doesn’t call it out for being corrupt or unjust. Instead, he chooses to educate people on the effects of lobbying, but also talks about its impacts, both good and bad.
Lobbying: The Art of Political Persuasion talks about how it may not be the worst thing to happen to out political system and how it could actually turn out to be one of the most beneficial systems for our politics!
“But why is it one of the best conservative books?” I hear you ask. It’s not because it’s a great book (which it is) but what you can take away from it.
The left vilify lobbying, yet Zetter explains how it the right can use it to their advantage, which the left seem unwilling to compromise on!
8. The Communist Manifesto
You’re probably thinking “The Communist Manifesto?! I thought this was supposed to be about the best conservative books, not communist ones!”
And yes, you are right. But there is a reason for its inclusion.
Read it, and think to yourself “Yeah, but this wouldn’t work though would it? Just think about it logically!”
I once knew a guy who could quote Marx, he wasn’t a communist by any means (in fact he was one of the most conservative fellows I have ever known!)
He read both The Communist Manifesto and Das Kapital. Whenever he got into an argument with a communist, socialist or liberal who quoted Marx, he would simply quote Marx back at them.
Soon, their smiles would turn into worry, and eventually, he’d scare them into being quiet.
Because there’s nothing more scary than someone quoting your idol against you!
7. Dark Money
On the surface of it, Dark Money may seem like a book that the left would enjoy, more than the right.
After all, it about the supposed corruption of politicians and how billionaire dynasties like the DeVos, Coors and Kochs can ‘tun’ the country.
But, in her attempt to prove that billionaires are evil and how they are abusing our political system, Jane Mayer proved that the left will do anything to stop conservatism.
Even if it means dragging other (somewhat) clean names through the dirt!
This is probably one of the best conservative books to read simply as it highlights the depths the left will go to make a point, even if that point is dead wrong!
6. Triggered
You’d never think that the son of an incumbent president would write a damning political book during his father’s presidency. But Donald Trump Jr. would!
His book, “Triggered” is three things in one: an argument against the left; an argument against political correctness and a glowing endorsement of his father’s presidency.
Part of the book states that the left has a severe victimhood complex (essentially meaning that they go out looking for sympathy as a way to avoid responsibility).
The next part of the book talks about how the left has forced political correctness onto us all. He argues that they are created to seed division in America.
He argues against phrases like “You can’t say that!” and “That’s (racist/homophobic/whatever)!” saying that the left is trying to control what people are trying to think.
A concept that goes very much against the US constitution.
The next part if the book talks about how the left is trying to attack him, conservatives as a whole and his father in particular.
This is probably one of the best conservative books to read for the twenty-first century as it talks about everything that is wrong with the left and their insistence on political correctness!
5. The Black Book of Communism
OK, now you know things are getting serious when the Europeans are getting involved.
In 1997, a group of European academics wrote a damning book on the atrocities and political repressions of various communist states including the USSR, China and North Korea.
It essentially talks about every crime the communists did in the twentieth century. From the invasion of Afghanistan to Stalin’s mass deportations in the 1920’s. The Black Book of Communism documents it all.
But its not the fact that it slates communism that makes it one of the best conservatives books to read. But the contrast you can see in it.
Whilst the world was engulfed by the Great Depression, Stalin was off mass deporting as many people as he could. Millions of whom died as a result.
4. If Democrats Had Any Brains, They’d be Republicans
Ann Coulter is certainly the most famous conservative author. Hands down, whether you like it or not.
Ann Coulter basically uses her books to attack the stupidest of the Democrats ideals. She was a big critic of both Obama and Clinton, as well as a major supporter of Bush and Trump.
One of her many books, If Democrats Had Any Brains, They’d be Republicans, is by far one of the best conservative books out there.
It essentially covers Coulter’s position on topics like:
- Her politics
- Hillary Clinton
- The environment
- Religion
- Global warming
- Gun control
- Bill Clinton
- Illegal aliens
She doesn’t take on with a “Democrats suck” or similar style, nor is it a rant. She does it in such a way, that you don’t even realize until you get to the end!
3. Ronald Reagan: How an Ordinary Man Became an Extraordinary Leader
Ronald Reagan was a man famous for being rejected from joining the communist party, and then going on to be their biggest adversary! (Yes, seriously, that is true!)
The book is written by former Reagan aide, Dinesh D’Souza, as a biography of Reagan’s life. Childhood, acting, and most prominently, his presidency.
Ronald Reagan: How an Ordinary Man Became an Extraordinary Leader, talks about everything Reagan.
The book essentially goes over (in excruciating) detail, the conservative philosophies and ideals of Ronald Reagan.
The book even goes into detail about how Reagan could’ve further gone at the communists and implemented more conservative philosophies, however these are subject to debate!
This is definitely one of the best conservative books that any conservative should read, as it talks about everything Reagan did right, and gives an almost unparalleled insight into his life!
2. Left Turn: How Liberal Media Bias Distorts the American Mind
Left Turn was penned by Professor Tim Groseclose. The book outlines the ways in which he calculated the media biases of most traditional news outlets in the US.
He found that most major news networks have a noticeable liberal stance, and whilst some media outlets (eg. Fox News) have conservative bias, it it nowhere near as much as other outlets.
He then proceeds to talk about ow this is affecting the US. And more noticeably, killing the American conservative mind in ways we just don’t know yet!
This book is one of the best conservative books out there, and one of the best exposés on the American media industry!
1. Atlas Shrugged
You’d never expect someone educated in Russia during the first half of the twentieth century would turn out to be one of history’s most conservative writers.
Then enters Ayn Rand.
Rand is best known for her magnum opus “Atlas Shrugged“.
The book is set in a dystopian United States, with many major twentieth century inventions such as jet aircraft left out of the picture.
Throughout the book, Rand uses her philosophy of objectivism. This is to say that she champions competition, creativity and human greatness.
It is often seen as one of the greatest conservative books ever written as it attacks the left, but doesn’t do it openly.
In the book, there are the “People’s States” which are implied communist or socialist countries. She attacks them by making them seem backwards and depraved, and often contrasts them to the dystopian US.
Which are the best conservative books in your opinion? Which will you read next? Tell us in the comments!
Don’t know if you could put the “conservative book” label on this one but Animal Farm should be required reading in every middle school. I read it yearly.
Hi Jon,
I would certainly agree that it belongs in the conservative book category- I hadn’t even though of it! George Orwell certainly has a certain way with words! I had debated putting 1984 on this list, but ultimately decided against it!
PS: I would also agree that every middle school, or perhaps every high school should be required to teach it!
