A while ago, we did an article on whether there would be a 2019 general election in the UK. We wrote that article due to the dis-contempt among the British people over Brexit… yes again.
Why are the British people dis-contempt with Brexit?
This has been covered in our previous articles, regarding Brexit, but also the wider internet as a whole. But it boils down to one key reason: Brexit was a lie from the get-go.
And when this lie was found out, many people who voted leave, chose to publicly renounce Brexit as a sham. Over the past three years, we have seen three different prime ministers, all of whom have failed to get a Brexit deal in place.
Now both Labour and the Conservatives have called for a general election, something that has been granted.
Who are the contenders for the 2019 General Election?
Before I tell you what the likelihood of someone winning, or even who I think will win, you must first know who is standing in the 2019 general election:
Conservative Party
The Conservative Party is currently in power, and have been handling Brexit for the past three years. The Conservatives are currently heavily divided on the issue of Brexit. Half the party is pro-Brexit, and the other half is anti-Brexit.
Party Leader: Boris Johnson
Labour Party
Labour are currently the main contenders to the current government in place. Labour has a mixed stance on Brexit too. Some want to get rid of Brexit, and others want a second vote. Although Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn has been criticised at times for being neutral on some Brexit issues.
Party Leader: Jeremy Corbyn
Liberal Democrat Party (Lib Dems)
The Lib Dems are seen as the new kid on the block (relatively when compared to the Labour and Conservative Parties). The Lib Dems have an anti-Brexit stance. The Lib Dem leader (Jo Swinson) hopes to get more seats in the House of Commons in order to stop Brexit by any means necessary.
Party Leader: Jo Swinson
Brexit Party
The Brexit Party is by far the newest party on this list, but also the most controversial. The Brexit Party is headed by former UKIP leader Nigel Farage, a man who campaigned for Brexit, and has been a Eurosceptic for many years. Their hope is to get into get into power and stop at nothing to bring the UK out of the EU by January 31st. Without failure. Without excuse.
Party Leader: Nigel Farage
Green Party
The Green Party hasn’t really changed their Brexit stance since their 2017 manifesto was released. They hope to win the 2019 General Election in order to cancel Brexit by revoking Article 50. They hope to accomplish this by giving a second vote, which would likely yield a remain outcome.
Party Leaders: Jonathan Bartley and Siân Berry (Co-Leaders)
Scottish National Party (SNP)
The SNP are quite well known for being anti-Brexit (pro-EU). They hope to gain as many seats in Parliament during the 2019 General Election, which would allow them to revoke Article 50 through a second vote. The SNP hope to ‘save’ Scotland (and probably the rest of the UK) by revoking Article 50.
Party Leader: Nicola Sturgeon
Plaid Cymru
Plaid Cymru are probably the least well known on this list. Plaid Cymru are the national party of Wales. They hope to gain more seats in the 2019 General Election in order to offer a people’s (second) vote on Brexit. Plaid Cymru hope to rescind the Brexit vote from 2016, in order to help Wales prosper as a country.
Party Leader: Adam Price
What are the odds?
Whilst it is very early days at the moment in order to say who will win the 2019 General Election, opinion polls show this:
- Conservatives: 37%
- Labour: 25%
- Lib Dem: 15%
- SNP: 12%
- Brexit Party: 6%
- Plaid Cymru: 2%
- Other: 3%
*Figures according to our research.
Who do I personally think will win?
Personally, I live in the UK, so this topic is quite close to home when to comes to general elections like the 2019 General Election. I have always personally, voted for Conservative, and I’m not sure if I will this time (although I likely will).
Personally, I doubt that the Conservatives will win the 2019 General Election. I believe that the constant messing around we have seen the past three years, three prime ministers and no Brexit deal, will deter Conservative voters.
If the Tories do get into power after the election, I’d say that it would be through the help of a coalition government.
It is as yet unclear who this coalition government could be formed with.
I would say that there is a high likelihood of Corbyn’s Labour Party coming out on top of this election. Corbyn has repeatedly used Brexit to rail against the Tories. This see something I could see him using in order to gain more voters whilst on the campaign.
Corbyn would likely come out on top of the General election by using promises to get votes. Corbyn has repeatedly been against a no-deal Brexit, something Boris Johnson has still yet to take off the table.
It is likely that Corbyn will use this too as a double edged sword to get votes.
He would probably tell the people that a government with him in charge would never see something like this happen.
But there is only one problem with a Labour Government… Mainly Jeremy Corbyn…
What is the issue with Jeremy Corbyn?
Jeremy Corbyn has been a divisive figure in British politics. He sacres quite a few people, including people within his own party. I spoke with one anonymous Labour Party member to talk about Prime Minister Jeremy Corbyn, they said:
I have been a Labour Party member my entire life. But [Jeremy] Corbyn scares me, he is still well renowned for having had a big bushy beard like Karl Marx, who is quite a taboo figure in Britain even now. […] I just don’t think he’s charismatic enough, he has the fire of socialism burning inside him, but he doesn’t direct it anywhere. [..] [And] that’s what makes him scary, I wouldn’t want him in charge of our nuclear weapons. […] If we had Ed Miliband or Hilary Benn, I’d feel much safer.
This is a sentiment I have seen shared quite a few times, not just by Labour Party Members. This is the most worrying part about a Prime Minister Jeremy Corbyn- would his party always support him? Or would they overthrow him like the Tories did to Theresa May?
I hope you have enjoyed this article on the 2019 General Election. Who do you want to win the 2019 General Election? Who do you think will win the 2019 General Election? Tell me in the comments!
