Brexit is less than 3 months away, we have spoken often on it, but now, I want to reveal my opinions on the British political system post-Brexit. I believe firmly that the post-Brexit United Kingdom will lead to either a socialist or communist uprising/revolt/revolution.
Why do I believe that Socialism or Communism will take over?
Many people’s initial reaction to this is “Yeah right!” or “This is just some old timer who doesn’t understand the world.” First of all, I’m only in my mid-thirties, so not that old (although my kids would disagree). Secondly, this article was written because I was recently in a secondary school near to where I live.
At the aforementioned school, I was asked to sit in a Year 10 (American 9th Grade) and observe them. In this lesson, the teacher was teaching the class about a book they were reading- An Inspector Calls. This book was written to advocate for Socialism or Communism (mainly socialism though), what I observed shocked me, the class was agreeing with socialist ideals.
I was the asked to stand up and give a presentation and talk about the book, in which I deviated from my plan, I asked a simple question “Who here would identify as Capitalist?” The response to that question shocked me- out of a class of 26, only one put their hand up. When he did, the class jeered at him and called him names, mainly “Selfish Boy”, although stronger language was used.
I spoke with him, and asked him why he identifies as a Capitalist. His reply was very straightforward “My father and Grandfather run their own successful business based here (in the UK), and I hope to go into business with them when I’ve completed my A Levels.” This was quite understandable of course, I then asked the rest of the class about their socialist opinions, these were their responses:
The rich cause our problems, by this she meant that corporations meddle in our life. She said that “Corporations pay nothing in taxes, yet my parents have to pay 40% of their hard-earned wages in taxes, it’s not fair!” So I asked her that if we made corporations pay more tax, would that be sufficient, she replied “No.” I then asked her to explain why, “They’ve taken and taken and taken, now it’s time for us to take from them.” To this the Capitalist-leaning boy replied “Your parents could have their own business and not pay tax, no one’s forcing them to do anything!” This is something I agreed with him on, something she ridiculed him for.
Wages are too low, despite Britain having one of the highest minimum wages across the planet, it is seemingly not enough. At this point, the observing teacher piped up and interjected, saying “I make just above minimum wage, and I have a degree, that’s simply not fair.” To that I asked her how old she was and had she tried to do another career, she was 23, and no she hadn’t. I then asked her if she’d ever asked for a pay rise, after all, it’s not too difficult, she again replied no, saying that she’d be sacked for it.
Everyone should be looked after, by this he meant that there were starving homeless people, whilst there were millionaires with 3 houses. I then challenged him with a simple question, “Did the millionaire(s) earn their right to have 3 houses?” He was taken aback by this, finally replying “Errr… no…?” So I asked him to elaborate on this, he replied that most millionaires got their money through inheritance, something that is plainly false.
When I told him, and showed him that this was false, using 5 websites to back this up, he told me I had picked the ones I knew backed me up. I refreshed my browser and told him to pick, he picked one and it told him just what I had said. I challenged him to use his phone as well for him to research it, he didn’t find a site that supported his opinion.
Capitalism is too greedy, the student said “Capitalism only focuses on the needs of the few rather than the many. My family isn’t wealthy, and we don’t have a lot of money but with Socialism or Communism we’d do our part and get supported.” It was at this point where the laughing had subsided and the Capitalist boy said “What do your parents do when they get home?” the student responded “Eating, Drinking (alcohol), and watching TV.” He responded, “Is this not time they could spend trying to make money?” The student then told him to “Bugger off” and “Never speak, never talk to anyone, never ever,” which was quite childish.
Rich people are “evil”, I probably should have foreseen this one, but I didn’t. The Capitalist boy replied, “They’re only evil because your jealous that you will never be part of them, because you do what everyone else does!” I did actually agree with that statement in all fairness, he went on to say that “We’ve seen it countless times throughout history. First it was the Greeks during the Roman Empire, then the Jews in the HRE, then Catholics and now rich people! It’s quite frankly absurd, and it’s all out of mere jealousy!”
I then took the Capitalist boy aside and asked him if he agreed with the statement. He spent a while contemplating it, and finally agreed that Socialism or Communism will take over soon. I also asked him on his opinions on Socialist or Communism, and he replied:
“It’s bad, simply terrible, the idea and execution are both bad. Look at Socialist or Communist countries, take for instance, the USSR, Lenin said in 1917 ‘Communism will live forever in Russia!’ 84 years later and the Russian population had had enough of being starved, over worked and abused, and Communism fell. Now, many people from the former Eastern/Soviet bloc come here for better lives and wages. Most of them work in low skilled industries such as construction or car washing, I don’t want my Great-Grandkids working in a car wash in rainy Stoke when they’re from sunny Bulgaria!”
Why do I/we believe that Socialism or Communism will happen after Brexit?
This isn’t the first documented case of young people being more socialist in even the past decade. More and more, young people are taking to Socialism or Communism. This is due to factors that are “outside of their control,” this has lead many to become angry at society.
But ultimately, I think that Brexit will be the tipping point, it’s expected to cause a recession in Europe and the U.K., and probably the US, we saw what happened last recession, with the March on Wall Street (Occupy Wall Street movement). I believe that the next recession (Brexit recession) will cause the already frustrated young people, to rise. When they do, anyone, remotely wealthy will be attacked.
How can I prepare?
You can’t in all honesty, not fully anyway. But you can do things like having bank accounts in different countries and some cash on hand if you want to get out. But other than that, you can’t really prepare for when, as I believe, Socialism or Communism takes hold in the UK, post-Brexit.
I hope you enjoyed this article on why Socialism or Communism will take over post-Brexit. Please keep the comments civil, this is merely my own opinion, you are entitled to disagree, in fact, I’d love to hear from you!
Wow! I’m surprised that this comments section hasn’t blown up with pro-capitalism or pro-socialism stances!
Wow! The admins must be doing a lot to keep these comments civil!
